New Medical Genetics Laboratory at San Giovanni Addolorata

New Medical Genetics Laboratory at St. John of Sorrows

By late summer 2020 at the A.O. St. John of Sorrows will be activated a new public Laboratory specializing in Medical Genetics. The facility will occupy an area of more than 600 square meters, based within the spaces of the Presidio Santa Maria, which will be renovated thanks to a specific regional funding of about € 550.000.

The new Pole was born out of the agreement between the A.O. San Giovanni Addolorata and the ASL Roma 1

The new center was born from the agreement between the A.O. San Giovanni Addolorata and ASL Roma 1, with the aim of integrating their respective activities in medical genetics into one large public facility, which will serve the population of Rome and the entire Lazio Region.

The two centers currently in existence have complementary laboratory expertise in prenatal, postnatal, genetic-molecular, onco-hematologic cytogenetics, and a well-established mutual collaboration for genetic counseling.

The union of the two facilities will make it possible to provide users with high-tech laboratory tests and specialized consultations integrated into the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up pathways shared between the Hospital and ASL in the field of onco-hematological diseases and maternal and child care.

The intent is to support people

The intent is to support people, who have the risk of developing a genetic disease, and their families, in learning about available preventive interventions and in making responsible procreative choices.

The new Medical Genetics Laboratory will consist of a Genetic Consultatory, a Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory and a Molecular Genetics Laboratory, equipped with the latest equipment and entrusted to a team of experienced professionals: physicians, biologists, laboratory technicians.

The facility also provides spaces dedicated to meeting with patients and families for genetic counseling activities: in fact, all the latest scientific information and indications on therapeutic, rehabilitation, and social support services will be provided.
